First, the writer is one of its characters; second, because Ian McEwan ’s novel creates a world where subjectivity and objectivity interfere mutually. Atonement, perhaps following the claim of its title, is a radical break with this earlier McEwan, and it is certainly his finest and most complex novel. It represents a new era in McEwan’s work, Atonement is one of those novels that captures you from the off.
