J.J Thomson's atomic model was a sphere embedded with electrons. The sphere had positive positive charges throughout it and negatively charged particles were also scattered across this model. Dalton's model explained that atoms were tiny invisibly, indestructible particles; And that each had a certain mass, size, and chemical behavior that determined by what kind of element they were.

Democritus - Proposed idea of atoms in 4th Century B.C., Dalton - Atomic theory, Mendeleev - First periodic table—arranged by mass.

In 1808 Dalton published a fuller account in the first part of A New System of Chemical Philosophy. However, it was not until 1811 that Dalton provided his rationale for his theory of multiple proportions. JJ Thomson called his atomic model the Plum Pudding model because the electrons reminded him of plums surronded by pudding (positive areas). contr ibution to ATOMIC THEORY. In 1897 Thomson discovered the electron. Thomson realized the accepted model of an atom didn't show negative or positively charged particles.

Thompson's Discovery and Atomic Model From this he discovered that no matter what metal the electrodes were made up of or what type of gas was in the tube, the mass to charge ratio was unchanged. He also deducted that there were two parts of atom held together by electrostatic attraction. Thomson also contributed to the discovery of the isotope and the atoms of the same element with different atomic weights. Cathode ray tube experiment A cathode ray is simply a glass tube where the majority of the air within the tube has been vacuumed out with electrodes at either side which was conducted by an electric charge that caused the tube glow. Thomson concluded that the atom can not be divided and that the atom must contain positive and negative charged particles. His atomic theory identified that atoms were not invisible. He also stated that electrons were positioned by electrostatic forces.

Thomson proposed that the shape of an atom resembles that of a sphere having a radius of the order of 10-10 m. Thomson’s Atomic Model.

principles of physical science: Development of the atomic theory J.J. Thomson ’s discovery of the electron in 1897 soon led to the realization that the mass of an atom largely resides in a positively charged part, electrically neutralized by a cloud of much lighter electrons.
