The Freshwater and Diadromous Fisheries section of the RI Division of Fish and Wildlife is located at the Great Swamp Field Headquarters, Great Neck Road, West Kingston, RI 02892 (401) 789-7481. The staff is responsible for the research and management of the freshwater and diadromous fisheries resources of the state.
Diadromous species, such as the Salmonidae and Anguillidae, which undertake large Diadromous fishes migrate between marine and fresh waters to feed or breed. They are biologically fascinating, and many of them support important sport or commercial fisheries. The phenomenon of diadromy was the focus of a 1986 symposium sponsored by the AFS Northeastern Division. Human‐generated pressures are continuing to have a detrimental effect on diadromous fishes, resulting in legislative initiatives to conserve and manage these species. Field studies to inform these initiatives focus almost exclusively on larger marine, estuarine, and inland waters, neglecting the role of small coastal streams and tributaries in population recovery.

Diadromous fish play a vital role in coastal ecosystems. Diadromous fish are a species group that includes both anadromous and catadromous fish. Anadromous fish, such as the American Shad Diadromous fishes There are only 7 freshwater fish species that occur in Iceland and all are either diadromous (that is, they migrate between freshwater and saltwater) or have diadromous origins. Diadromous fishes describe species that spend part of their lives in freshwater and part in saltwater.
River regulation has degraded aquatic biodiversity globally, and the effects can be pronounced for diadromous species, whose life history processes can depend on flow conditions, such as cues for adult migration, spawning, attracting recruits into coastal rivers and promoting upstream dispersal.
i) Anadromy (from the Greek Ana "up"): Diadromous fishes in which most feeding and growth occur at sea prior to migration of adults into freshwater to reproduce (e.g. salmon, sea lamprey, sturgeons, shads); Diadromous, amphidromous, potamodromous, oceanodromous.

The migration patterns differ for each species and have seasonal and lifecycle variations. Only one percent of all fish in the world are diadromous. Some diadromous fish migrate great distances, while others migrate much shorter distances. Division of Marine Fisheries DMF’s Diadromous Fish Project maintained a nearly routine schedule this year to monitor river herring, shad, eel and smelt populations and work on fishways despite the challenge of the pandemic. Diadromous proved a useful word, but terms proposed by Myers for other types of diadromous fish did not catch on.
